Have you ever wondered what others in your community are having for lunch today? While many of us enjoy a hearty meal, hundreds of our neighbors may not be having lunch at all if it weren’t for the dedicated efforts of our CareLink Meals on Wheels volunteers. These volunteers deliver more than just a hot, nutritious meal—they bring a vital human connection, often being the only person a homebound client sees all day long.
Why Volunteer for Meals on Wheels?
Make a Tangible Impact
By volunteering with Meals on Wheels, you directly impact the lives of homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities. Your efforts ensure that these individuals receive essential nutrition and a friendly visit, which can significantly improve their quality of life. For many recipients, the Meals on Wheels volunteer might be the only person they interact with all day, providing not just food but also a crucial human connection.
Flexible Commitment
CareLink makes volunteering easy and flexible, allowing it to fit into your busy schedule. Here’s how it works:
- Orientation and training: CareLink provides comprehensive orientation and training, making you feel confident and prepared.
- Established routes: You’ll drive on an established route, making it easy to navigate and deliver meals efficiently.
- Convenient pickup locations: Meals are ready for pickup at a location convenient to you.
- Manageable time commitment: Just one day a week, Monday through Friday, you’ll pick up 10–15 meals around lunch time, with deliveries taking about an hour.
Community Engagement
Volunteering is a wonderful way to engage with your community. Whether you’re an individual or a member of a church, business, or other group, CareLink welcomes volunteers from all walks of life. Volunteering as a group can strengthen bonds and foster a sense of shared purpose. Companies and organizations can also participate in corporate social responsibility initiatives, enhancing their community involvement and team spirit.
Join Hands with CareLink
CareLink's Meals on Wheels program is about more than just delivering meals—it's about fostering connections and showing our neighbors that we care. Your involvement can bring hope and joy to those who might otherwise feel isolated and forgotten.
A Day in the Life of a Meals on Wheels Volunteer: Cathy and Mike Moran’s Story
Cathy and Mike, a retired couple who have been volunteering with Meals on Wheels for over eight years, are a testament to the profound impact and rewards of this program. Both former high school English teachers found that delivering meals in North Little Rock provided a meaningful way to spend their retirement while giving back to their community.
Building Lasting Relationships
Cathy and Mike's favorite part of volunteering is the people they meet. Cathy enthusiastically shares, “The people! Oh. My. Goodness. Talk about interesting people. Unfortunately, they want to talk and talk and talk, but we just don’t have the time because we have to get to the other people. So, I have become friends with some of them, especially the women, and I have been over to their houses on my own time. So, we can do just that. Talk!”
Over the years, Cathy and Mike have formed incredible friendships and learned valuable lessons from their clients. Cathy fondly recalls Jean Martin, a 98-year-old client with whom she has built a close relationship. Jean and Cathy discovered they had much in common, including shared memories of North Little Rock and mutual acquaintances.
Experiencing Gratitude and Giving Back
Mike highlights the overwhelming gratitude they receive from the clients. “The amount of gratitude that we get is far beyond what we deserve, but it’s always appreciated. The people we have delivered to have been so grateful and expressive of that, and it makes it easy to keep coming back.”
Cathy and Mike's story illustrates that volunteering with Meals on Wheels isn’t just about delivering meals—it’s about building connections, offering support, and making a real difference in the community. They have gone above and beyond, even helping clients with yard work and other tasks when they noticed a need.
Adapting Through Challenges
Cathy and Mike continued their volunteer work even through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating their dedication and resilience. They adapted to the new safety protocols and continued to provide much-needed support to their clients.
